Unit 12: Jackson Takes Office

The War of 1812 is over and the United States is feeling confident.  All though there was no deceive winner, the Battle of New Orleans showed the United States was a country to be reckoned with.  Now the United States is looking to gain more power and doing so means becoming an industrial power and expanding its border.    The industrial revolution launches the United States into a new age but also bring along problems.  Andrew Jackson will later become president after the notoriety of the Battle of New Orleans and works to expand the United States under the new policy of the Monroe Doctrine.  Many historians regard him as one of the greatest presidents of all time.  However, students need to decided was he that great by examining the bad along with the good.  They need to decided if Andrew Jackson is acting for the common person or making himself a king.
 
Learning Targets/Essential Questions:
1) What are the differences between Whigs and Democrats?

2) What is sectionalism and what events lead to this?

3) What are some good and bad things that Andrew Jackson did as president?

4) Who are the presidents of the United States?

5) Student can analyze a political cartoon and determine the meaning.

Harper's Weekly published this political cartoon mocking President Jackson. However, Jackson liked the nickname and the democrat party adopted the donkey as their party symbol.

Outline of Events

April 11: Students receive their tests and retake policy  Lesson over political cartoons.               
             Homework for flipped lesson: Watch  video 1, video 2, & video 3  and complete handout
April 14: Discussion of videos and work to decipher political cartoons over American System & Monroe Doctrine.  
             Homework: For those who didn't complete yesterday's lesson watch this video  
April 15: What makes a good president?  Ppt over Andrew Jackson presidency.   Students finish summarizing Jackson's speech. 
Students will ready his 1st state of union speech. and work in groups groups of 3 to summarize what he said.   Retake Day
April 16:  Review from yesterday with Andrew Jackson videos 1,2, 3.  During this time meet with retakers.   
               In groups work to analyze political cartoon of Natives and Jackson.  .
April 17: Ppt over Indian Removal Act.  Students work work in groups to read the article Removed and summarize it in 5 sentences.     RETAKE DAY
April 18: Students research about their assigned perspective.   RETAKE DAY
April 21: Wrap up unit with the depression the United States is left in. 
              During writing class you will be working on writing a story about the Trial of Tears from your assigned perspective using storyjumper.com.    RUBRIC
April 22:   Andrew Jackson Wrap Up and Debate    
April 23: Test (Review session before school 7:30-8:25am)
