Timeline Of Events (These are some not all events) 

2001
Sept 11:  Bin Laden attacks the United States

Sept 18: George Bush (president at time) agrees to use force against those who attacked

Oct 07: US bombs Taliban forces in Afghanistan 

Oct 19: Troops invade on the ground

Dec:  Many months of fierce fighting

2002
Nov: A plan is established to rebuild Afghanistan

2003
May: Secretary of Defense (Man in charge of war under the President) Donald Rumsfeld declares an end to major combat

Aug: NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) World peace keeping organization, takes control of forces

2004
Jan: New constitution is created

2005:
Sept: Afghans vote in first elections

2006
July: Violence surges

2009:
Feb: US President Obama says he will send more troops to Afghanistan

2010 
July: Deadliest month for US troops. 66 killed

May 2: Osama bin Laden is captured in Pakistan

Afghan Security takes full control 
The US still has 51,000 troops in Afghanistan

As of October 23rd 3,393 deaths of coalition troops

2016
Peace Deal was agreed upon


2017-2019
Around 13,000 troops currently in Afghanistan as part of NATO’s support mission; sporadic fighting has taken place.

Connection to Iowa-It's worth watching
Many Iowas have fought and lost their life fighting in Afghanistan.  The video on the left is a story about a Navy SEAL from Iowa.
