Unit 16 Civil War
The Civil War has begun. There was no way to prevent it. Compromises have failed. The Dred Scott case ruled slavery could exist anywhere. The lines have been drawn between the North and the South and with the election of Lincoln, South Carolina secedes from the Union. This unit will focus on what the strengths and weakness are for both sides and critical battles that allow the North to win. Students will also learn what life is like for soldiers by reading letters and witness a Civil War reenactment from Ely's reenactment group. The unit will conclude with the North winning the war but emphases how race relations for blacks failed to improve.
