Unit 3: Settling the Americas

In this unit students will explore the age of exploration. The age of exploration is a period of time when new discoveries were made and Europeans made first contact with cultures that were strange and different from their own. Students will learn what events happened to lead Europeans out of the Western Hemisphere and into the Americas.   They will also learn where Europeans settled in the "New World", and why they choose to settle there. Students will also be examining  consequences of colonization, including the Colombian Exchange, the encomienda system and the introduction of slavery in the "New World".

Learning Goals:
1) What other explorations and events are happening in the world that will set the blueprints for Columbus coming to America?

2) What is imperialism?

3) Why did people want to settle in the New World?

3) What went right and wrong at Jamestown?
