Operation Iraqi Freedom
US foreign intelligence (spying) believes there is "Weapons of Mass Destruction." This would refer to the making of chemical weapon. What should the United States do? Wait, attack, or nothing? What could the outcome be if they choose not to attack? Should the United States risk it? The United States decides to go in and remove the weapons and remove Saddam finally from power.
This is a brief timeline. It highlights some of the events but not all during the war.
-------------------------------------------------------- 2003 March: US begins the invasion of Iraq and uses missiles on Baghdad. American, British, Australian, Polish and Danish military all took part This was known as the "Shock and Awe" campaign. July: The Iraqi Governing Council is established to start a government in Iraq. October: No evidence of weapons of mass destruction. Throughout the entire year many car bombs and suicide truck bombs are used to kill hundreds of people. December 13: Saddam Hussein is captured by the US 4th Infantry Division Two Iowans were part of the team that helped capture him. US President Bush says the decision to invade Iraq in 2003 was the result of faulty intelligence, and accepts responsibility for that decision. There are no weapons of mass destruction
