Unit 4: the Thirteen Colonies
This unit explains who came to America, where they settled, and why they decided to come. The thirteen colonies are broken into three different regions, New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies. All are vastly different but have some remarkable similarities. Students will be comparing and contrasting these colonies throughout the unit. We will also be examining the roots of Slavery in the United States. Students we will learn about the capturing process and what the middle passage (ride over) was like. During this unit we will watch Roots episode I to give us a more in-depth view of what life is like for a slave.

1) New England Colonies: What colonies make up the North? Who founded the colonies and why was it founded?
2) Middle Colonies: What colonies make up the Middle? Who founded the colonies and why was it founded?
3) Southern Colonies: What colonies make up the South? Who founded the colonies and why was it founded?
4) Slavery: Understand what life is like on the middle passage and how Africans were captured.
5) John Locke: How does John Locke’s ideas influence the creation of the American government?

October 15: Students work in groups to examine gravestones from New England. HOMEWORK: New England Worksheet
October 16: Take picture notes over the middle colonies
October 17: Finish taking picture notes over the Middle colonies and review New England with video.
October 18: Timeline Review Activity and review over the Middle colonies with video HOMEWORK: pg 112 1-5
October 21: Southern Colonies ppt & timeline activity
October 22: Review Southern Colonies through video. Discuss the Glorious Revolution HOMEWORK: Southern Colonies
October 23: Students listen to a story over the middle passage. After that activity students will take notes over slavery from slave trade ppt.
October 24: Finish yesterday's activity & watch Roots
October 25: Watch Roots
October 28: Finish watching Roots. Students had time to work on essay and review guides. Each student meet with Ms. Meller' about grades.
October 29: The Roots of Self Government DUE: MIDDLE PASSAGE ESSAY
October 30: Review for Test
